Sanjyo-dori
This street runs from east to west in the center ofKyoto. Along Sanjyo-dori, you can see the retro-modern architectures and visit a wide variety of shops. These shops produce goods with a modern, artistic twist using traditional methods. On this street, you may feel aesthetic sense coming from its 1200 year-long history.
Machiya Townhouses (Shiorian and Yoshidake)
Machiya Town house is atraditional wooden architectural style that can be seen in central Kyoto. The machiya town house layout allows to live their daily lives and operate their business in the same building Because of their long and narrow shapes, the machiya townhouses are nicknamed “ beds for eel”. Generally, they have been designed to showcase Kyoto’s beautiful seasonal elements throughout the year.
Shiorian
Originally Shiorian was built as the hospital in the latter part of Edo period and then in 1926 the present building was built by the wealthy merchant ,Risuke Inoue. Now, this stunning traditional machiya townhouse is devoted to kimono culture; superb Japanese-style interiors as a museum and is opened to the public.
Yoshidake
Yoshidake, constructed in 1909, is located in the Kyoto kimono wholesale district, Muromachi and a typical merchant house in Kyoto. Machiya townhouses are practical structure but also full of decorative features. Each building has a variety of finely worked details created by master craftsmen that ate pleasing to the eyes. In this context, Yoshidaya is one of the most finest machiya townhouses in Kyoto.
